Support Footprint’s sensory bathroom appeal

Strode Park Foundation’s residential home ‘Footprints’ in rural Canterbury, which supports young people with complex disabilities, is appealing for support to create a new purpose-built sensory bathroom that will transform daily life for its residents.

For the young people with disabilities at Footprints, bathing is far more than a routine task. Many of them love water, and time spent in the bath provides a vital sensory experience that is calming, enjoyable, and therapeutic. Several residents spend over an hour bathing each day, as it helps to reduce anxiety, soothe muscles, support respiratory health, and prepare them for physiotherapy. For many, it is the most peaceful part of their day.

The home’s current bathroom is old, worn, and the dedicated care team is passionate about replacing it with a fully accessible sensory bathroom, including a specialist spa bath, calming music, soft lighting, and modern fixtures and fittings to create a safe, relaxing environment.

Laura Pearce, Home Manager at Footprints, said: “A sensory bathroom would be incredible. The space would finally function as it should and look beautiful, too. Instead of constantly making small repairs, we could create something very special, a space our young people deserve. It would be genuinely transformative.”

The total cost of the project is £30,000. Footprints is seeking donations of any size, as well as contributions of bathroom items or specialist equipment, to help bring the sensory bathroom to life.

“With the support of the local community, local businesses and organisations, we can create a bathroom that is not just functional, but meaningful for the young people who call Footprints home,” added Laura.
